Khaleda told to apologise to nation
Senior Awami League leader Suranjit Sengupta has asked BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia to withdraw her ‘indecent remarks’ on the constitution and apologise to the nation.
“Khaleda Zia should ask for forgiveness to the nation. She made an irresponsible remark on the constitution which is tantamount to sedition,” he said, addressing a discussion at Sufia Kamal Public Library auditorium on Saturday.
Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote organised the discussion marking the ‘Jail Day’ of prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
Hasina was arrested in 2007 on corruption charges and had to spend about 11 months behind the bars during the military-backed caretaker government regime.
Khaleda at a mass hunger strike on July 13 termed the 15th amendment to the constitution an Awami League agenda and said it would be thrown away if BNP returns to power.
“Only the opposition is capable of making such a remark about the constitution, as it always thinks about grabbing state power through coups,” Suranjit said.
Suranjit, a member of the Awami League advisory council and chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on law ministry, said after coming to power, BNP had swept under carpet democracy, spirit of the Liberation War and the sacrifices of martyrs, and turned the country into Pakistan by dumping the constitution.
On June 30, the 15th Amendment to the constitution was passed in parliament, which scrapped the caretaker government system.
