Ershad is alternative if Khaleda quits: Selim
Jatiya Party chairman Hussein Muhammad Ershad will be made the leader of the opposition if BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia quits, Sheikh Fazlul Karim MP has told parliament.
“You (Khaleda) have threatened to step down, if necessary, when you were abroad. I welcome you,” Selim said on Saturday.
“We know you. You won’t reject the facilities [enjoying as the opposition leader],” he said.
“The moment you’ll resign, we’ll bring in Ershad through by-elections. He’ll be made the opposition leader, if necessary,” he added.
Selim, an MP from Gopalganj-2, made the remarks as he took part in general discussions on the proposed budget.
The grand alliance holds 256 seats in parliament with 231 by Awami League, while 25 by the Ershad-led Jatiya Party and 31 by BNP.
‘IT’S NOT AN INDUSTRY’
Urging the opposition to return to parliament, Selim said, “Instead of joining the session, you’re threatening from outside. This is not a trade union. We aren’t owners and you aren’t the workers. The House isn’t an industry,” he said.
About the charter review bill tabled earlier in the day, he said, “You’ll have to say in parliament how impartial election is possible.”
The charter review bill was formulated in line with the court verdict repealing the caretaker government system. The special committee on constitution amendment also recommended scrapping the system.
BNP has long been protesting the move to amend the charter. As part of its protests, it enforced two general strikes so far and threatened to wage a tougher movement.
